What Is a Prerelease?

Prerelease events are your first chance to play with cards from the brand-new Aetherdrift set before its official release on February 14, 2025. You’ll build a 40-card deck from your Aetherdrift Prerelease Pack, which includes:

  • 6 Aetherdrift Play Boosters
  • 1 Traditional foil, year-stamped rare or mythic rare card
  • 1 Max speed helper card (brand-new to Aetherdrift)
  • 1 Deck box
  • 1 Spindown die (in one of five possible color variations)

Stores typically supply basic lands; bring your imagination and a competitive spirit!

Key Aetherdrift Highlights

Aetherdrift brings a race-centric, high-octane spin to Magic with two exciting new mechanics:

  1. Exhaust – Use these activated abilities to slowly outvalue your opponents and pave the way for powerful combos. Cards like Adrenaline Jockey grow stronger every time you activate an exhaust ability, while others like Elvish Refueler help you get more mileage out of your best spells.

  2. Start Your Engines! (Max Speed) – Perfect for aggressive decks. Deal consistent damage to “rev up” your Max Speed meter and unlock additional bonuses on cards like Gastal Raider. Hitting max speed fast can overwhelm your opponent before they get rolling.

If you’d like a deeper dive into set mechanics, sealed deck–building tips, and each color pair’s theme (a.k.a. “draft archetypes”), check out the full Wizards of the Coast article, The Guide to Your First Prerelease with Aetherdrift.

Building Your Sealed Deck

  • Threats First: Identify your strongest creatures, Vehicles, or bombs (usually rare or mythic rare).
  • Removal Next: Gather spells that can destroy, exile, or bounce enemy threats; Aetherdrift offers targeted removal in every color, from Gallant Strike (White) to Crash and Burn (Red) and more.
  • Mana Curve: Aim for a balanced mix of early-, mid-, and late-game plays (about 17 lands total).
  • Color Pairs: Typical sealed decks are two colors, but Aetherdrift includes common dual lands if you want to “splash” a third color.

Prizes

We’re adding two booster packs per person into the prize pool—meaning the more people who join, the bigger the haul for top finishers! Each Player will leave with at least one prize pack!
