Jaspar quieted her with a look. “Come now, boy,” he said, touching his hand. Jo yanked it away as if shocked by a surprising cold.

“The black dragon comes for me in my dreams,” Jo said, his voice hardly louder than a whisper. “Its eyes bleed. It eats me and I am gone until I open my eyes and then I am the dragon.” He took a sip of water. “I can still feel it. Inside of me.” Jo grabbed Jaspar’s hand. Hard. “It wants out.”

“What else does it want?” Jaspar said, Malik taking notes behind him.
